Overview

StructureMe is an AI-supported academic reading tool designed for novice readers. Instead of replacing a research article with a summary, it keeps learners in the full text and makes its structure visible through color-coded annotations, goal-oriented highlighting, an in-context AI assistant, and personal notes.

I conducted a literature review of 12 research papers, co-designed StructureMe's UX prototype and learning experience, and developed its proposed evaluation plan.

Background & Problem

With the rapid development of large language models, AI-generated article summaries have become increasingly common in academic reading among students. However, they can gradually strip away learners' full cognitive processes of independent thinking, deep textual inquiry, and reflective processing. Learners may focus more on "what is presented" rather than "why and how it is constructed."

The novice-reader gap

Unlike experts, who can quickly and intuitively recognize the underlying structure of academic texts, novice readers often lack the sensitivity and experience needed to identify hierarchical relationships among different article sections. Overreliance on AI-generated summaries may cause them to skip the important process of building structural understanding through sustained reading, resulting in fragmented and superficial comprehension.

Solution Design

StructureMe reconsiders the role of AI in serious academic reading. Rather than replacing reading, it supports learners in actively identifying and internalizing article structure while they engage with the original content under AI guidance. In response to a user's question, StructureMe highlights the relevant passages in the article and uses those connections to guide the learner's thinking.
